2021 February and March Programs

LRC Spring Learning

LRC is opening 2021 by extending special pricing. For a limited time, students may register for our (academic assistance) programs and services at reduced rates. In addition to LRC’s sliding fee scale (UW) (based on gross family income and household number), deserving students may be eligible to receive scholarships, based on need, to use towards LRC programs and services.

Lower fees and scholarships may be applied to LRC’s 1-to-1 tutoring as well as 2021 Spring slate of courses geared towards middle school through adult levels.

Study Habits

Study Habits of Successful Students provides study skills and motivational strategies to prepare students in grades 6-8 to become more effective learners. Students will learn and practice time-tested, effective, and efficient study strategies. The course is designed to offer small classes with activity-oriented lessons to help students learn and practice these study habits such as getting motivated, listening actively, taking notes, managing time, setting goals, and more. Study Habits will begin Wednesday, February 10.

ACT/SAT Prep

Both ACT and SAT Preparation courses provide students in grades 9-12 with the tools to achieve their best possible score on the exam. This course provides small classes with highly trained teachers, problem-solving strategies for analyzing and answering questions, practice taking the test, emphasis on test-taking techniques and strategies specific to the exam that build confidence and reduce test anxiety. SAT Prep will begin on Tuesday, February 16, while ACT Prep will begin on Monday, March 8.

GED Prep

GED Prep will aid adult students working towards their GED certification. A highly qualified instructor will provide tips, techniques, teaching, and training through a series of four courses, one for each subject-area exam. The next course is GED Prep Social Studies and will begin on Tuesday, February 2 and Science on Tuesday, March 2.

In addition, we offer 1-to-1 tutoring, in-person or virtual, year-round for all grade levels.

Director’s Thoughts – January/February 2021

The future faculty of a new elementary school developed a list of accomplishments for which they wanted to work and gain with their students. Can you guess what rose to Number One? To be kind!

These are indeed critical times in the lives of our children. Families had to cope with the effects of COVID; schools had to pause and rearrange; parents had to assist with navigating online learning; and communities had to come together to provide food and housing. But, there is an end, a tomorrow, a future. If “to be kind” is at the top of each of our lists, we can start right now at getting on with the days and ways in which our children can thrive once again.

And, just a reminder as the First Semester of 2020-2021 comes to an end, the Learning Resource Center is poised and ready to help in any way possible so that every child (or adult) can be as successful in school as he or she can be. LRC continues to honor deeply discounted rates until the end of the school year. United Way of Central Florida has extended its allocation. In the past few months, donors have been kind and generous, building up the LRC scholarship fund so that deserving students can receive the additional academic help that they need. We Can Help!

Enrolling GED Prep Social Studies February 2021

The Learning Resource Center’s GED Preparation Course helps change lives by preparing adult students studying for the GED, working to shape their futures, to pass each subject-area exam.

About GED Prep

This course is designed to help students achieve their best possible score by providing small classes with a highly-trained instructor; problem-solving strategies for analyzing and answering GED questions; practice taking GED exams; emphasis on test-taking techniques and strategies specific to the GED that help build confidence and reduce test anxiety.

The GED test is comprised of four subjects created to test students’ skills and knowledge in different topics. The four subjects are:

I. Math– Quantitative & algebraic problem solving
II. Science– Life science, physical science, earth and space science
III. Social Studies– Civics and government, U.S. history, economics, geography and
the world
IV. Reasoning Through Language Arts– Ability to read closely, write clearly, and edit/understand written text

The courses are held virtually. All subjects take place over four weeks except for math, which is eight weeks.

Each subject course costs $25. Scholarships may be available based on need.

Next Course

We are currently enrolling for the next course which will focus on Social Studies. The class will begin on Tuesday, February 2, and will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. through Thursday, February 25.

Volunteer with LRC May 12-15 at PigFest 2021

The Board of Directors of the Lakeland PigFest have officially announced that they are postponing the 2021 event. With careful consideration for the success of the event, now in its 25th year, the Board has decided to move the festival to May 14-15 at the Sun ‘N Fun Expo Campus in Lakeland.

Each year, the Learning Resource Center partners with PigFest, providing volunteers to assist. In return, LRC earns funds based on the amount of service hours that LRC staff, board members and community volunteers provide.

LRC’s gratitude overflows for the many volunteers who have dedicated their time to help fill 100+ shifts each year that inlcude duties in the judging area (ages +16), with golf cart shuttles (ages 18+ with valid driver’s license) and at the VIP Party (ages 21+).

This continues to be a great opportunity for both individuals and groups to give back in a fun way while experiencing a popular festival as well as an excellent chance for students (16+) to acquire service hours.

If you are interested in volunteering with LRC at PigFest 2021 and would like “dibs” on volunteer shifts, please email LRCpolk@gmail.com. We’ll fill you in on openings closer to the event. LRC’s shifts will take place Wednesday, May 12-Saturday, May 15, 2021. Be sure to mark these dates on your calendar!

About:

 

  • Second grade and higher
  • 2 or more players
  • Students will recognize numbers and practice addition
  •  
    Supplies:

    One deck of playing cards

    Activity Overview

    In this game, face cards will equal 10. Aces will either be worth one or 11; decide this before you begin play.

    Goal: To use addition skills and number sense to recognize the equation that equals a specific number.

    1. Deal out all of the cards, face up, in a 13 x 4 array.
    2. Player 1 finds two cards next to each other, vertically or horizontally, to add to make a number. They do not share the two cards, just the number of their sum.
    “I spy two cards with a sum of…”
    3. Player 2 looks for the two cards that equal the sum that Player 1 named.
    4. Player 2 will take those two cards once they find them.
    5. Players will alternate, taking turns.
    6. After many turns, the array can be reformed to continue play.
    7. Players continue until there are no more equations that can be made.

    Variation: Play the game with multiplication instead of addition for advanced learners.

You have been the light of our 2020, and we want to continue to share the impact of your unwavering support.

Because of you, we were able to share triumphs such as these two together:

Together, we were able to raise more than $4,600, reaching 93% of our $5,000 goal, to aid adult students working to earn their GEDs. You did more than donate to a scholarship fund on Giving Tuesday. You gave money and hope directly to students working hard, balancing their jobs and families while earning their GED.

Because of you, LRC was named the Best Learning Center in Central Florida! For the first time since 2017, LRC was voted number one within The Ledger’s annual “Best of Central Florida” people’s choice awards. With more than 238,000 total votes in 170+ categories, we consider it no small feat and know this wouldn’t be possible without our group of loyal supporters.

We appreciate your sincere acts and trust even in the hardest of times. We wish you and your loved ones a safe, joyful holiday season!

The LRC office will close for the holidays on Thursday, December 24-Friday, December 25 and Friday, January 1. Weekdays during December 21-31, the office will be open from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

My Heartfelt Christmas Thank You is for…

Your friendship—joining the Learning Resource Center in its mission to continue as a provider of quality instruction and programs;

Your Loyalty and Commitment—enhancing the work of this small not-for-profit by cultivating and extending the message that LRC can HELP; and

Your Generous Support—sharing your time, talents, as well as financial resources to meet the needs of children, adults, and families in our communities:

– Although we were just short of our goal, Giving Tuesday is affording adults eager to earn their GED the opportunity to participate in critical preparation classes.

– LRC’s sorely depleted scholarship funds have seen donations in the past few days. These funds help those students whose families cannot pay for tutoring help even with the sliding fee scale amount underwritten by United Way funding.

My favorite Christmas sentiment is…

Learning & Loving It: Give Me Ten Math Card Game

About:

 

  • First grade and older
  • 2 or more players
  • Students will recognize numbers and practice basic addition
  •  
    Supplies:

    One deck of playing cards

    Activity Overview

    Remove all face cards before playing. Aces are worth one.

    Objective: Players will take turns finding and removing combinations of cards that add to 10.

    1. Deal 10 cards face up.
    2. From the 10 cards, Player 1 will try to find as many card combinations (using two cards) that will add to 10.
    3. When there are no more combinations left, Player 1 will keep all of the cards used for their equations.
    4. If there is a 10 card, the player will take that card as well.
    5. Replace the cards that were removed so that there are ten cards face up again.
    6. Player 2 will take their turn.
    7. Alternate turns until a player reaches the decided score (1 card=1 point).

    The player with the most cards/points wins.

    Variation: Find three cards that add up to a target number (such as 20).

  • Students will recognize numbers and practice addition, subtraction, multiplication and/or division
  •  
    Supplies:

    One deck of playing cards

    Activity Overview

    In this game, face cards will equal 10. Aces will either be worth one or 11; decide this before you begin play.

    Goal: To use as many of the five cards to equal the target number each round–at least two must be used or the player will lose their turn.

    1. Lay out five cards face up.
    2. Flip the next card, which will be the target number card for that round.
    3. Player 1 may add, subtract, multiply or divide using cards from the five to hit the target number.
    4. Player 1 will take all of the cards from their equations plus the target number card.
    5. Replace cards by flipping over five new ones and a new target number card for Player 2.
    6. Player 2 takes their turn.
    7. Players take turns until fewer than six cards remain.

    The player with the most cards wins.

LRC Raises Giving Tuesday 2020 Funds for GED Prep

Thank you for your donations, support, and interactions on Giving Tuesday! Our community rallied to raise more than $4,000 to support students who are working hard to earn their GEDs. Wendell Powell, who started the GED program, said, “Each student in this program has a drive within them. They just need a chance to light that fire.” You gave them that chance!
 
You did more than donate to a scholarship fund. You gave money directly to students who are working hard to balance their jobs and families while they earn their GED.
 
There are few things as beautiful as watching our community rally around students who are working hard to advance their education. Thank you for supporting them.
 
Keep an eye out for another update about what you helped achieve on Giving Tuesday. In the meantime, the Learning Resource Center staff will be busy celebrating you and your generosity.
