2021 February and March Programs

LRC Spring Learning

LRC is opening 2021 by extending special pricing. For a limited time, students may register for our (academic assistance) programs and services at reduced rates. In addition to LRC’s sliding fee scale (UW) (based on gross family income and household number), deserving students may be eligible to receive scholarships, based on need, to use towards LRC programs and services.

Lower fees and scholarships may be applied to LRC’s 1-to-1 tutoring as well as 2021 Spring slate of courses geared towards middle school through adult levels.

Study Habits

Study Habits of Successful Students provides study skills and motivational strategies to prepare students in grades 6-8 to become more effective learners. Students will learn and practice time-tested, effective, and efficient study strategies. The course is designed to offer small classes with activity-oriented lessons to help students learn and practice these study habits such as getting motivated, listening actively, taking notes, managing time, setting goals, and more. Study Habits will begin Wednesday, February 10.

ACT/SAT Prep

Both ACT and SAT Preparation courses provide students in grades 9-12 with the tools to achieve their best possible score on the exam. This course provides small classes with highly trained teachers, problem-solving strategies for analyzing and answering questions, practice taking the test, emphasis on test-taking techniques and strategies specific to the exam that build confidence and reduce test anxiety. SAT Prep will begin on Tuesday, February 16, while ACT Prep will begin on Monday, March 8.

GED Prep

GED Prep will aid adult students working towards their GED certification. A highly qualified instructor will provide tips, techniques, teaching, and training through a series of four courses, one for each subject-area exam. The next course is GED Prep Social Studies and will begin on Tuesday, February 2 and Science on Tuesday, March 2.

In addition, we offer 1-to-1 tutoring, in-person or virtual, year-round for all grade levels.

WE CAN HELP—With both your supplemental learning & elearning needs

Everyone can agree that school looks different this 2020-2021 year. For some, it means increased safety measures, procedural changes and fewer peers to share their brick and mortar campus with. For others, the setting has changed entirely and consists of interacting and learning all from a home computer.

Whether attending school on campus or remotely, LRC is here to assist with all academic needs. Students attending on campus may benefit from afterschool supplemental tutoring for homework support or remediation. eCampus or Polk Virtual students may find our expanded elearning support and coaching options best suited for them.

Our eCampus and Virtual support offers students personalized coaching options of 1-to-1 or small group guidance at flexible locations. Working with parents to determine the best location for the “learning hub” and catering to families’ scheduling needs enables LRC to offer an unmatched, adaptable, customized approach best suited for parents and students.

LRC Learning and Loving It

Word Sliders

This is a fun, quick and easy way to make a hands-on game for reading practice. This concentrates on reinforcing, decoding and blending skills using word families. These words have a common sound, pattern and letter combination.

Learning & Loving It Word Slider

Supplies:

Paper plate, markers, paper/card stock, and scissors; optional: this reference sheet for word families if you’d like to use it

Learning & Loving It Word Slider Supplies

Creating your slider

1. Cut your paper into vertical strips about 1 or 1.5 inches thick.
2. Choose a paper plate (any size; smaller plates easier for smaller hands).
3. Pencil in two lines on plate in this fashion: = and cut slots with pointed scissors. This is where the strip will go.
4. Choose your word family, and write the common ending letters on the plate.
5. Prepare the strips with initial consonants and/or blends, leaving space between each one. (Parents can pencil in guidelines if these will be written by the student).
*Note: when working on blending sounds, even nonsense words can be used
6. Thread your strip through the slot. You’re ready to play!

Students can track how many words they can say on each strip for points and/or time themselves to beat their score.

The ultimate goal is to increase speed and fluency.

These manipulatives are inexpensive and easy to make. They’re also fun for children to play with! They can be used at home, in the car, at a restaurant or even at the beach.

The Learning Resource Center Achieves Phase 1 of Matching Fundraiser, Moves On to Phase 2

The Learning Resource Center of Polk County (LRC) has successfully reached its goal during the first phase of the matching fundraiser. In this initial stage of a two-step matching campaign, LRC needed to reach a goal of $20,000 by May 31, 2018 in order for a funder(s) of GiveWell Community Foundation to match the amount, dollar-for-dollar.

LRC has attained the first stage with the help of numerous donors.

Now, the 43-year educational organization has entered the second phase consisting of a 1:2 match of $20,000. To receive the additional $20,000 from the private funder(s), LRC must raise $40,000 by September 30, 2018.

If LRC succeeds in both matches, the organization will have raised $60,000 and will receive a matching amount of $40,000, earning $100,000 total over a six-month period.

The Learning Resource Center has been named Polk County’s Best Learning Center of 2017.

LRC learned of this distinction at The Ledger’s awards ceremony on the evening of September 21 at the R.P. Funding Center. The top three winners of each category were first revealed leading up to the announcement of overall winners.

The Ledger created The Best of the Best awards in 2016. Adding new categories including the Learning Center/Tutor category, the 2017 contest gave the public the opportunity to vote for their favorites in 149 categories during two installments. In the first round, individuals were able to submit their nomination daily in any or all of the 149 categories, which ranged from education and dining to shopping and services (among others). The second round began in mid July and allowed voters the chance to select one of the top five nominations in each category daily over two weeks. More than 450,000 votes were cast throughout the competition. Succeeding the two rounds, The Ledger revealed the best local business winners during a banquet in late September. The winners were also published in the newspaper following the ceremony.
