2021 February and March Programs

LRC Spring Learning

LRC is opening 2021 by extending special pricing. For a limited time, students may register for our (academic assistance) programs and services at reduced rates. In addition to LRC’s sliding fee scale (UW) (based on gross family income and household number), deserving students may be eligible to receive scholarships, based on need, to use towards LRC programs and services.

Lower fees and scholarships may be applied to LRC’s 1-to-1 tutoring as well as 2021 Spring slate of courses geared towards middle school through adult levels.

Study Habits

Study Habits of Successful Students provides study skills and motivational strategies to prepare students in grades 6-8 to become more effective learners. Students will learn and practice time-tested, effective, and efficient study strategies. The course is designed to offer small classes with activity-oriented lessons to help students learn and practice these study habits such as getting motivated, listening actively, taking notes, managing time, setting goals, and more. Study Habits will begin Wednesday, February 10.

ACT/SAT Prep

Both ACT and SAT Preparation courses provide students in grades 9-12 with the tools to achieve their best possible score on the exam. This course provides small classes with highly trained teachers, problem-solving strategies for analyzing and answering questions, practice taking the test, emphasis on test-taking techniques and strategies specific to the exam that build confidence and reduce test anxiety. SAT Prep will begin on Tuesday, February 16, while ACT Prep will begin on Monday, March 8.

GED Prep

GED Prep will aid adult students working towards their GED certification. A highly qualified instructor will provide tips, techniques, teaching, and training through a series of four courses, one for each subject-area exam. The next course is GED Prep Social Studies and will begin on Tuesday, February 2 and Science on Tuesday, March 2.

In addition, we offer 1-to-1 tutoring, in-person or virtual, year-round for all grade levels.

LRC is rolling out its lineup of 2017 summer enrichment programs for kindergarten through high school grade levels.

Kindergarten-Readiness

Rising and repeating kindergartners can gain the skills necessary for school at LRC’s Camp READY! featuring multi-sensory learning experiences in a fun, engaging format at ten locations throughout Polk County. On average, Camp READY! students who attend the full program demonstrate learning gains of seven months in vocabulary development. Camps will take place for four weeks during June 6-July 28, 2017. Dates and times vary by site. The cost is $25 for the entire month.

Elementary Academic Camps

Students entering 1st- 5th grade are invited to Camp Discovery at All Saints Academy in Winter Haven. Camps will focus on critical thinking, reading, writing, science and math skills, offering students four, week-long camps during June 5-30, 2017, Monday-Friday. Choose half-day camp from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. for $140 per week or full-day from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. for $200 per week.
 
Students entering 1st-6th grade are encouraged to attend Super Summer Success, an enrichment program that helps students maintain their mental momentum throughout the summer with a fun and active approach to reading, writing and math. Super Summer Success will take place June 12-29, 2017, Monday-Thursday, from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. at South McKeel Academy in Lakeland. The full cost is $315.
 

Study Skills

Middle school and high school students may consider study skills courses that provide motivational strategies and study techniques to become more effective learners. Study Habits of Successful Students for grades 6-8 will take place July 10-14, 2017 from 9:30-11:30 a.m., while Get the Competitive Edge…College Success Planning for grades 9-12 will take place July 10-14, 2017 from 1-3 p.m. Both will be held at the Learning Resource Center in Lakeland. The cost for each is $145.
 

Test Prep

High School students will benefit from LRC’s ACT and SAT summer test preparation courses. Preparation courses are designed to build confident, successful students, helping them achieve their best possible score through problem-solving strategies tailored towards each test. The ACT Summer Prep Course will take place July 17-21, 2017 (9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. for the full course) at the Learning Resource Center, while the SAT Summer Prep Course will take place July 24-27, 2017 (9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. for the full course) at the Learning Resource Center in Lakeland. The cost of each full course is $440 and includes a book.
 

Tutoring

In addition to the courses and camps mentioned, LRC also continues One-to-One Tutoring services for students of all ages who feel they need an extra boost during the summer months. With more than 500 tutors throughout Polk County who are able to help students in numerous subjects or prepare for various assessments, LRC will find a tutor that can meet your academic need in your area.

This fall is shaping up to be another busy semester for the Learning Resource Center and LRC students. In addition to programs such as ACT Prep and SAT Prep, Study Habits of Successful Students for grades 6-8, Get the Competitive Edge…College Success Planning for grades 9-12 and year-round One-to-One Tutoring, LRC is working with the community in the following programs that have just begun or will soon begin.

Who We Help

Each school year brings both challenges and opportunities to many students. The Learning Resource Center of Polk County will offer fall enrichment programs for all grade levels to help combat these challenges while creating opportunities.

Test Prep


High school students will have the opportunity to become test-wise with SAT and ACT preparation. Both courses will provide students in grades 9-12 the problem-solving strategies, test-specific techniques and motivation needed to build confidence while reducing test anxiety, allowing them to achieve their best possible score.
 
SAT Prep is scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays with three courses this semester: September 6-29, 2016; October 4-27, 2016 and November 1-December 1, 2016.
 
ACT Prep is scheduled for Mondays and Wednesdays with two courses this semester: September 26-October 19, 2016 and October 24-November 16, 2016.
 
Each will take place from 5:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m. for four weeks at the Learning Resource Center and will include one Saturday writing session from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The cost of the full SAT Prep or ACT Prep course is $440.
 

Study Skills


Both high school and middle school students will have the opportunity to join grade-appropriate study skills courses that will provide motivational strategies and study techniques, enabling them to become more effective learners. Study Habits of Successful Students for grades 6-8 will take place on Mondays during September 26-October 24, 2016, while Get the Competitive Edge…College Success Planning for grades 9-12 will take place on Mondays during October 31-December 5, 2016. Both courses will are scheduled for five weeks from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at the Learning Resource Center in Lakeland. The cost for each is $145.
 

One-to-One Tutoring


In addition to the programs mentioned, LRC offers year-round one-to-one tutoring throughout Polk County for students of all levels. Highly-qualified teachers will provide each student with customized, academic opportunities designed to meet the student’s individual learning style.
 

Financial Assistance


Thanks to United Way of Central Florida, LRC is able to offer a sliding fee scale. Scholarships are available for families with documented financial need for any of these programs. The Learning Resource Center’s Summer 2016 opened with a bang! Here is just a snapshot of the programs, in addition to LRC’s regular Exceptional Student Education and one-to-one tutoring.
 

Camp READY!

Ten camps located throughout Polk County–Frostproof, Bartow, Ft. Meade, Lake Wales (2), Haines City, Poinciana, North Lakeland, South Lakeland, Winter Haven—offered engaging activities for over 300 students to prepare for Kindergarten. Nine camps were funded by United Way of Central Florida, and one camp was underwritten by a GiveWell Foundation donor.

PEP Summer Camps

Polk County Schools provided Title 1 funds for three weeks of destination camps at PEP Education Center and Inwood Elementary School in Winter Haven. Sixty 1st-5th grade students participated in hands-on science, health, and music experiences which focused on strengthening reading and math skills.
 

LRC Elementary Summer Success

McKeel Academy South was the summer site for 23 elementary students working to increase proficiency in vocabulary, reading comprehension, and basic math concepts.
 

Galindo Tennis Academy

Once again this summer, four international high school tennis athletes supplemented their tennis workouts with English Language and Reading instruction on the FSC campus.
 

Sheriffs’ Girls Villa Summer Programs

Residents of the Villa have access to Study Skills and Test Preparation.
 

Test Prep

Twelve students attended LRC’s ACT and SAT Preparation Course to get ready for their college entrance exams in the upcoming school year. Twenty students enrolled in LRC’s GRE Prep Course hosted by Florida Southern College.
 

Study Skills for Successful Students

Ten students (elementary, middle school and high school students) acquired those skills necessary for academic and real life success.
 

College Reach Out Program (CROP)

Thirty students visited the University of Central Florida at the end of the July to tour the campus and experience a college environment.

Prevent summer learning loss with the Learning Resource Center’s summer programs for all ages over the next two months, including a couple geared towards elementary students.
 
In addition to hosting Camp READY!, a school-readiness program for students entering into kindergarten in the fall, LRC will also hold two elementary camps, Super Summer Success and PEP Summer Camps 2016.

Students who have just completed any grade between kindergarten-5th this school year are invited to attend Super Summer Success at South McKeel Academy. This summer enrichment course will offer students a fun way to gain important skills in reading and math and a great way to reinforce their skills through interaction and review. The classes will be small and will include hands-on, high-interest activities as well as interactive teaching by certified instructors. Super Summer Success will take place June 20 – July 14, Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. (excluding Monday, July 4) at South McKeel Academy, which is located at 2222 Edgewood Drive, South, Lakeland, FL 33803. The cost is $395 for the entire four-week course. Scholarships are available for families with a documented financial need. Students who have completed any grade between kindergarten-4th and will enter 1st-5th grade in the fall, may consider PEP Summer Camps 2016. These camps will offer students math and reading practice in an exciting way that will accompany week-long themes of science, sports and art & music at one of two Winter Haven locations, the PEP Education Center or Inwood Elementary. This program will also include high-interest, hands-on lessons, skill reinforcement and interactive teaching by certified instructors. PEP Summer Camps will take place Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. over the following weeks: June 13-16, June 20-23 and June 27-30 at the PEP Center located at 203 Avenue R NE, Winter Haven, FL, 33881 or Inwood Elementary located at 2200 Avenue G NW, Winter Haven, FL 33880.
