LRC Rolls Out Summer 2016 Programs for All Grades

The Learning Resource Center is offering summer enrichment programs for the 2016 season for kindergarten through high school grade levels. Scroll down to find the level you’re seeking below.

Kindergarten


Rising and repeating kindergartners can gain the skills necessary for school at LRC’s
Camp READY! featuring multi-sensory learning experiences in a fun, engaging format at ten locations throughout Polk County. On average, Camp READY! students who attend the full program demonstrate learning gains of seven months in vocabulary development. Camp READY! dates are June 13-July 29, 2016. Each camp will take place Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. for four weeks except for Poinciana and Ft. Meade camps, which will take place Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. Dates vary by location. The cost is $25 for the entire month.
 

Elementary


Students entering 1st- 5th grade are invited to PEP Summer Camps in Winter Haven. A collaboration between LRC, Polk County Public Schools and the Winter Haven Public Education Partnership, this enrichment program will offer students three week-long camps at the PEP Center or Inwood Elementary. Camps will focus on science, sports and art & music with math and reading components and will take place from 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m., Monday-Thursday on June 13-30, 2016. The cost is $25 per week.
 
Students who have completed kindergarten through 5th grade are encouraged to attend Super Summer Success, an enrichment program that helps students maintain their mental momentum through the summer with a fun and active approach to reading, writing and math. Super Summer Success will take place June 20-July 14, 2016 from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. at South McKeel Academy in Lakeland. The full cost is $395.
 

Middle School


Middle school students may consider Study Habits of Successful Students for motivational strategies and study techniques to become a more effective learner. Lessons will include: Get Motivated, Listen Up and Take Notes, Set Goals to Achieve, Read Actively, Manage Your Time, Become Test-Wise. This study skills course will take place July 11-15 from 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. at the Learning Resource Center in Lakeland. The cost is $145.
 

High School


High school students can “get the competitive edge” with College Success Planning. Students enrolled in this course will learn and practice time-tested, effective, and efficient study strategies, as well as concrete techniques to gain the competitive edge necessary for high school and college. College Success Planning will take place July 11-15 from 1 p.m.-3 p.m. at the Learning Resource Center in Lakeland. The cost is $145.
 
High School students will benefit from LRC’s ACT and SAT summer test preparation courses. Preparation courses are designed to build confident, successful students, helping them achieve their best possible score through problem-solving strategies tailored towards each test. The ACT Summer Preparation Course will take place July 18-22, 2016 at the Learning Resource Center, while the SAT Summer Preparation Course will take place July 25-29, 2016 at the Learning Resource Center in Lakeland. The cost of each full course is $440.

Now Enrolling: Elementary Summer Programs

Make sure that your kids are not only busy this summer,
but that they’re busy learning!


Prevent summer learning loss with the Learning Resource Center’s summer programs for all ages over the next two months, including a couple geared towards elementary students.
 
In addition to hosting Camp READY!, a school-readiness program for students entering into kindergarten in the fall, LRC will also hold two elementary camps, Super Summer Success and PEP Summer Camps 2016.

Students who have just completed any grade between kindergarten-5th this school year are invited to attend Super Summer Success at South McKeel Academy. This summer enrichment course will offer students a fun way to gain important skills in reading and math and a great way to reinforce their skills through interaction and review. The classes will be small and will include hands-on, high-interest activities as well as interactive teaching by certified instructors. Super Summer Success will take place June 20 – July 14, Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. (excluding Monday, July 4) at South McKeel Academy, which is located at 2222 Edgewood Drive, South, Lakeland, FL 33803. The cost is $395 for the entire four-week course. Scholarships are available for families with a documented financial need. Students who have completed any grade between kindergarten-4th and will enter 1st-5th grade in the fall, may consider PEP Summer Camps 2016. These camps will offer students math and reading practice in an exciting way that will accompany week-long themes of science, sports and art & music at one of two Winter Haven locations, the PEP Education Center or Inwood Elementary. This program will also include high-interest, hands-on lessons, skill reinforcement and interactive teaching by certified instructors. PEP Summer Camps will take place Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. over the following weeks: June 13-16, June 20-23 and June 27-30 at the PEP Center located at 203 Avenue R NE, Winter Haven, FL, 33881 or Inwood Elementary located at 2200 Avenue G NW, Winter Haven, FL 33880. Now Enrolling: Camp READY! Summer 2016

Camp READY! dates are set for Summer 2016.
 
If you have a rising or repeating kindergartner, make sure they’re prepared for academic success by enrolling them in the Learning Resource Center’s annual kindergarten-readiness program. On average, Camp READY! students have shown growth of seven months from pre- to post-assessment in just four weeks.

Through hands-on, experiential learning centers lead by qualified teachers, students will experience learning that is fun!
 
With art, music and movement, cooking, and reading-readiness centers, Camp READY! builds pre-reading skills while also providing a safety net to allow children more time to continue motor, social and cognitive development. Teachers will engage students in themed rich language-laden lessons, while also providing learning opportunities for parent involvement at camp and at home.
 
The program is designed for students entering or repeating kindergarten in August 2016.
 
This year, Camp READY! is scheduled to take place at ten campsites throughout Polk County. Each camp will last a total of four weeks, Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. (with the exception of Poinciana & Ft. Meade) Dates vary by camp. (See below)
 
The cost of camp is $25 for the month and includes a shirt. If this fee causes a financial hardship, please call LRC at 863-688-9477 to discuss scholarship options.

UWCF CIT Visits Provide LRC Opportunities

LRC had the privilege and honor to host two of United Way of Central Florida’s Community Investment Teams on Tuesday, April 12 and Wednesday, April 13. These 14 volunteers are charged with deciding allocations for LRC in 2016-2017. LRC Staff engaged the guests in interactive learning centers to inform and emphasize need, application, and impact of two UWCF funded programs—Camp READY! and Academic Assistance.

LRC Students Received 1,441 Hours of Tutoring in March

In the month of March, Learning Resource Center students received 1,441 hours of tutoring, bringing the Year-To-Date Total to 10,011 hours.(please note that the YTD total starts over in July). New and ongoing students tutored during the month of March equaled 390 students.

Volunteers Give Back During UWCF Day of Caring 2016

United Way of Central Florida and Polk Kiwanis Clubs brought the community together to give back during National Volunteer Week. With two designated days for volunteerism, United Way Day of Caring on Friday, April 15 and Kiwanis One Day on Saturday, April 16, teams of volunteers from local organizations and individual volunteers were able to join together to help local nonprofits.
 
The Learning Resource Center was thrilled to be part of the event and would like to express sincere gratitude to both organizations as well as Lakeland Regional Health, who recruited a team of outstanding volunteers to help beautify the LRC office.

The group arrived around 8:30 a.m. where LRC staff greeted them. Executive Director Pam Craven briefed the team with details on the organization and the tasks at hand.

The tasks included cleaning gutters, sweeping steps, washing windows and pressure washing the building and fence. The Lakeland Regional Health team graciously and willingly took on this feat.


Thanks to LRC’s United Way Day of Caring 2016 team for refreshing the appearance of the office’s exterior and making it bright white again!

Prep for the New SAT with LRC

The next SAT will take place on May 7, and the deadline to register for this exam without a fee is April 8. Those of you who are registered or plan to register, are you prepared for it? Do you feel comfortable with the new SAT format? Do you think your score will reflect your maximum learning potential?
 
Answer “yes” to all of these questions after taking LRC’s SAT Prep.
 
The course will begin on Tuesday, April 12 and will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays for four consecutive weeks, through Thursday, May 5 at the Learning Resource Center in Lakeland. In addition to the four Tuesday and Thursday sessions, the course will also include one Saturday session.

Last year, the camp took place at nine sites throughout Polk during June through August. Each site’s camp will last four weeks. While we are still working on the specifics of each site for 2016, we are accepting volunteers.

For the Love…of Learning 2016 was a success!

The 2016 Oscar-themed fundraising event took place at the exquisite home of Richard and Mary Ellen Krakowski in Lakeland’s Grasslands Saturday evening. The cocktail-chic affair not only served as a way to raise scholarship funds for deserving LRC students, but also served as the center’s 40th Anniversary celebration.
 
Over the course of the evening, guests were able to view and bid on an array of items showcased throughout the house while enjoying savory hors d’ouvres from Terrie Lobb Catering, libations by Head Over Heels Bar and live entertainment from The Sofa Kings. Jennifer Leigh of New Channel 8 hosted the affair as the Mistress of Ceremonies and introduced LRC star students Jaylen Arnold and Jaylaycia Lewis. LRC also recognized past and present board members with medals in celebration of the nonprofit’s 40 year-history and named GiveWell Community Foundation the For the Love…of Learning 2016 Honoree.
 
While LRC is still working on the numbers, it appears the organization is well on its way to surpassing 2015’s fundraiser earnings of more than $21,000 in scholarship funds that assisted more than 25 deserving students.
 
LRC is grateful for all of the generosity and support that went into making the event a success and is elated for the ability to continue assisting deserving students in this way that the community has helped make possible.
