Many Polk Children Start Kindergarten Behind — Camp READY! Helps Build a Stronger Start

This recent LKLDnow article highlights an important reality for Polk County families: too many children are starting kindergarten without the foundational language, attention, and self-regulation skills they need to thrive. Kindergarten readiness is about far more than knowing letters and numbers — it includes the ability to follow directions, engage with others, communicate clearly, and participate confidently in the classroom. When children begin school already behind, the impact can carry forward into later reading success and overall academic progress.

At Learning Resource Center, we believe that early support can make a meaningful difference. That is why programs like Camp READY are designed to strengthen vocabulary, build confidence, and help children practice the kinds of classroom behaviors that support a successful transition into kindergarten. Through hands-on learning, movement, conversation, and play-based instruction, Camp READY helps children grow in ways that matter most during this critical stage. We are grateful to be part of a community-wide effort to give more Polk County children the strong start they deserve.
